Huckleberry

After a very brief, valiant bout with cancer, Huck passed away peacefully at home at sunset yesterday, with his head snuggled in my lap, Ross and I stroking and loving him along the way.

It goes without saying that he was the best dog in the whole world.  It is comforting that he was hiking and chasing birds just a couple of weeks ago. And the last thing he did was to go to the beach to sniff, paw, wade and greet other dogs—he died with wet paws.  And prance: he pranced until the very end.

He had a wonderful, wonderful life, a brief illness with just enough time to say good-bye, and a good death.  We should all be so lucky.

But, oh, how I will miss him.
